The Thunder Coast: Raiden Kaigan behind the Niseko Mountains

The coastline east from Shakotan Peninsula stretching to the west is called as the Raiden Kaigan (雷電海岸: thunder coast in Japanese), with cliff rocks and sandy beaches.  It is less crowded and easy to drive than Shakotan, and local bus drivers are friendly. Inland highland is off-the-beaten-track donned with hidden waterfalls, mountains and onsen.

Route 229 running east from Iwanai along the Raiden Coast through precipitous cliff. You will find the Benkei’s Katanakake-iwa (弁慶の刀掛岩: sword rack rock) at Raiden Onsen and the herring fishing houses around Utasutsu (歌棄).
