Samani Mountain Path - Constructed in 1799 by the Edo shogunate
Constructed in 1799 by the Edo shogunate, a 4km-long Samani mountain path (様似山道) along the town’s east cliff coast connects Horoman (幌満) with Fuyushima (冬島).
This historic path begins near Horoman (幌満) bus stop, a 20-minute by bus from Samani Station. Cross the Horoman bridge (幌満橋) and go down the left side stairs in front of the tunnel (pass under the bridge) then walk along the river, you will find the trailhead. Note that rocky riverbed and small stream may become flooded on a rainy day.
The mountain is the habitant of brown bears, you should tie a bell to avoid the risk.
It takes roughly four hours. The tourist office has a useful handy map.
At the midpoint on the path, there is an old site of Harada Inn (原田旅宿跡) surrounded by the forest.
Fuyushima (冬島) bus stop is 1km west of the end point of the path close to the fishing port.
