Sakhalin Korsakov - Just 159km north of Wakkanai by ferry
Sakhalin’s southern port town of Korsakov (Корсаков: コルサコフ) is a seasonal ocean gateway from and to Japan. In 1890 Chekhov stayed here for three weeks and interacted with Japanese consul (he was also planning to visit Japan). During the rule of Japan, this town was called Odomari (大泊). After WWII, Korsakov became a navel port and closed to foreigners until the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
In 1991, the passenger ferry from Wakkanai in Japan was revival. If you are entering Sakhalin from here, consider heading on for Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk after focused on Japanese heritage.
