The Golden Road: Scenic byway between Hidaka and Tokachi

One of Hokkaido’s most famous national road connects Shoya (庶野) and Hiroo (広尾), the coastal Golden Road (黄金道路: Ohgon Doro) was constructed in 1934 with a huge amount of money. Today there are a number of long tunnels and sheds on this scenic road. If you are driving on this road, stop by the Golden Road Viewpoint (黄金道路展望台), about 2km east of Shoya).

The Erimo-Ohgon Tunnel (えりも黄金トンネル: 4941m), between Shoya and Meguro, is the longest road tunnel in Hokkaido.
