Otaru is famous for fresh seafood such as nishin (herring: ニシン), shako (squilla: シャコ) and uni (sea urchin: ウニ). Sushiya-dori (寿司屋通り), lined with about 20 sushi restaurants, serving a fear price plates and kaisen-don (seafood bowl: 海鮮丼).
The city's oldest tavern district (nomiya-gai) of Hanazono (花園), close to Sushiya-dori along the JR line, dotted with old-fashioned but unique izakaya and bars. It is a pretty good place to hang out at night.

This classy German-style pub Otaru Soko No.1 (小樽倉庫No.1) offers tasty craft beer with affordable snacks such as chicken and salads for its use of local foodstuffs at the old warehouse building, set along the canal side.
